Chess Tournament in Stann Creek, Nov 24th

Everybody felt welcomed that day because of the huge amount of efforts that the organizers, local clubs coaches and community volunteers put into it!

Reflection on the event by Brian Chun:

In an effort to promote mental discipline within our youths and encourage them to use a full range of life skills The Stann Creek Chess Club, the organizing body for Chess clubs within the Stann Creek district, as affiliated with the National Youth Chess Foundation, conducted its first of many chess tournaments on the 24th November 2007. A total of three high schools namely Delille, Ecumenical and Independence High School and seven primary schools Sacred Heart, Holy Angels, Christ the King, Hope Creek Government ,Siene Bight, Holy Ghost and Placencia Primary.




The day’s activity was filled with twenty boards being played at the same time where minds were challenged as table produces a winner after each game. The evening finishes off with the overall winners in each division being decided on final games. With additional recognition made to other players for best female ,best attitude for both female and male in primary and high school division. Additionally the National Youth Chess Foundation has offered a prize to attend their chess camp at Sibun River for overall best attitude, sportsmanship and good performance for primary school division to Ever Ramirez of Siene Bight Primary.

It was a perfect example of the collaborative effort of local chess clubs and Belize National Youth Chess Foundation. Special thanks must be made to volunteers especially Maritza and Debbie , and coaches from the Stann Creek District who ensure that we made the tournament a success.
